By its nature, mass transportation depends on engineering large vehicles in relatively low volumes. If you need to manufacture short runs of substantial metal components, Crossen Engineering has the equipment, experience and engineering know-how to help you navigate the twin concerns of scale and cost.
We will advise you on any design adjustments that will help ensure your part withstands the rigours of large- scale metal forming, as well as its intended use.
Lightweight or heavyweight, flexible or robust, we will help you decide on the right material for the job.
We use state-of-the-art laser cutting machinery to reduce the cost of forming large panels in low volumes, while achieving unique shapes and profiles to match your design.
Our metal forming equipment has the power needed to press even the largest metal components into shape. We can make parts of up to 2.5m x 1.5m for your vehicles.
Bus manufacturer Wrightbus has built its reputation on building public transport vehicles that combine structural and mechanical reliability with stylish design, including on its New Routemaster buses, which operate in London.
The panels that adorn the Wrightbus chassis are key to ensuring both the structure and aesthetics are maintained. We were tasked with engineering an access panel that forms part of the wheel arches of its StreetLite model. It needed to be a sturdy component of the bodywork, while also operating as a hatch to allow for maintenance work around the wheel.
Key to this project were the requirements for production of 2-metre x 1-metre parts in low numbers at a sustainable price and without compromising on quality or design principles.
Working with the customer these panels are produced in 1.5mm aluminium, which is robust enough to endure long-term daily use and provide protection to passengers, while also delivering a weight reduction that improves performance and fuel- efficiency. Starting with a flat sheet of aluminium, laser cutting technology is used to cost-effectively cut the profile of the arch in the low volumes needed to fulfil bus orders. Then using our 500-tonne capacity power-press, we press form the panel, incorporating a ridged finish around the arch to fulfil Wrightbus’ iconic design.
