PLASTIC PARTS THAT GIVE PEACE OF MIND

People depend on a reliable seal between their stoma wound and bag to avoid leaks and the associated anxieties. Innovative Ostomy product manufacturer TG Eakin tasked us with producing a two-part plastic seal that would avoid leaks but also enhance ease of use. Even the tightest seal is useless if it prevents quick and easy removal of the bag.

Working closely with Eakin’s R&D team, we created aluminium prototype mould tooling for a short-run of a male and female ring to form the seal. Ostomy bag users gave their feedback during trials. We tweaked the design and mould accordingly — fractions of millimetres meant the difference between an embarrassing or frustrating user experience and the complete peace of mind towards which Eakin was working.

THE SEAL OF APPROVAL FROM USERS

After confirmation from the user testing programme that the latest prototype was working as intended, we helped Eakin to transition from the low volume trial process to high volume production. We created new tooling to allow multiple parts to be produced simultaneously, bringing manufacturing costs down to the required price per unit. Our production line operates 24 hours-a-day to meet demand for this part.

As well as forming the seal, the eye-catching purple ring we made in Eakin’s brand colour also serves as a visual guide to help people see where to attach their bag as part of the Eakin Dot two-piece flat system.
